MACON, Ga. -- The George Washington lacrosse team overcame a halftime deficit to defeat host Mercer, 9-6, on Tuesday evening at Five Star Stadium.
Sophomore Jocelyn Donohue posted her second hat trick of the season and also won a pair of draw controls, while juniors Shea Cassidy (2g, 1a) and Bailey Forcier (1g, 2a) each tallied three points apiece.
Mercer (1-5) scored the first two goals of the game, but a 3-1 GW run -- with all three goals scored by Donohue -- tied the game with 11 minutes remaining in the half. The Bears found the back of the net with less than two minutes to play and took a 4-3 lead into the locker room.
The Colonials (2-5) quickly knotted the score out of the break as Forcier found junior Michaela Lynch just three minutes into action, and junior Cassidy Shollenberger gave GW its first lead 69 seconds later. Mercer followed with two in a row to regain a 6-5 advantage, but Lynch's second goal of the game ignited a 4-0 GW run that gave the Colonials the lead for good, 9-6, with four minutes remaining. Cassidy tallied twice during the spurt. Meghan Segreti notched her second of the game for the Bears with three minutes to go, but the hosts would get no closer.
Sophomore goalkeeper Adele Wise recorded eight saves between the pipes, as Mercer's seven goals were the fewest allowed by the Colonials this season. Haleigh Wurzel stopped seven shots for the Bears.
GW outshot Mercer, 18-16, and held a 28-18 advantage in ground balls, with four apiece from senior Julia Lawson and freshman Bridget Cassidy and three each from Forcier, Lynch and Wise. The 28 ground balls were a season high for GW.
The Colonials return home on Saturday to host Old Dominion for Kids Day at 1 p.m.
