GW Lacrosse Drops Home Opener to Yale

WASHINGTON -- The George Washington lacrosse team dropped its home opener to Yale, 17-7, on Saturday afternoon at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Sophomore Jocelyn Donohue paced the Colonials' offense with two goals and an assist. Junior Cassidy Shollenberger also scored a pair of goals, and junior Shea Cassidy tallied a goal and an assist plus three ground balls and two draw controls. Junior Bailey Forcier won a team-high three draw controls, and senior Gabbi Hull matched her career-best with three caused turnovers.
Yale (3-4) got on the board first when Lauren Wackerle scored just 44 seconds into the game, but Forcier tied it up two minutes later with a free-position goal. The Bulldogs followed with four in a row to grab a 5-1 lead before Shollenberger and senior Julia Lawson scored back-to-back goals in a 23-second span to pull within two at 5-3. Yale scored twice more in the half, and Donohue tallied the final goal of the period to make it 7-4 at the break.
The Bulldogs again scored early in the second half before the Colonials got it back with Donohue's second goal at 22:41, but Yale rattled off nine straight goals over the next 15 minutes to break the game open. Cassidy and Shollenberger rounded out the scoring for GW (1-5) with consecutive goals over the final two minutes for the 17-7 final.
Sophomore Adele Wise and junior Erin Long split time in goal and combined to make eight saves. Sydney Marks stopped seven shots for the Bulldogs. The Colonials held an 11-10 edge in ground balls.
Wackerle led Yale's offense with four goals and two assists, while Tess McEvoy, Emily Granger and Lily Smith had three goals apiece.
The Colonials return to action on Tuesday, when they visit Mercer for the first time ever.
