WASHINGTON - The GW softball team returns to action on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader at Norfolk State beginning at 1 p.m.
The Colonials opened the 2016 season with five games at the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, California, last weekend and were led by junior Monica Macchiarulo's .429 (6-for-14) average with two RBIs at the plate. GW stole seven bases in eight attempts, while sophomore catcher Aiyana Leal-Robles gunned down two would-be thieves on the defensive end.
Norfolk State opens its spring slate on Saturday. Third baseman Whitney Williams was named to the preseason All-MEAC team after batting .362 with 26 RBI, 22 runs, six doubles and seven home runs in 2015. The Spartans were picked to finish third in the Northern Division.
Last season, the Colonials took both ends of a doubleheader from Norfolk State, led by senior Carlee Gray (4-for-8, 2 RBI) and sophomore Morgan Rinehart (3-for-6, 3 RBI). In the circle, Costlow posted a shutout victory, 5-0, in the nightcap.
GW leads the all-time series against the Spartans, 3-0-1.
Doubleheader action will begin on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the NSU Softball Field.
