This Weekend: The George Washington sailing team competes in its first two regattas of the spring season: The Charleston Women's Inter-Conference Regatta and The Pirate Team Race Regatta. The team hopes to build off of its strongest fall season in program history, appearing in the top 15 in both the women's and coed division of the final Sailing World College Rankings.
Charleston Women's Inter-Conference Regatta: Leading the team in the A division boat is skipper Miranda Bakos and crew Belle Strachan, while skipper Hannah McNomee and crew Madison Oleson will be competing in the B division. Alternate crew members for the regatta include Kia Olsson and Emma Mendenhall. Scores can be followed here: http://scores.collegesailing.org/s16/charleston-women/.
Pearce's Points: "Several of the top teams in the country will be in attendance, including Dartmouth and Rhode Island who finished first and second respectively at the Women's Atlantic Coast Championships at the end of the fall season. We are excited to get back on the circuit and building on last semesters success!"
Pirate Team Race Regatta: Three boats will be taking the field for GW: skipper Andrew Sheerin and crew Shira Golub, skipper Derek Poon-Tip and crew Mercedes McPhee, and skipper Sam White and crew Alexandra Fayer. Each team will sail in a head-to-head race against the other teams in a round-robin format. The winning team will have the best win-loss record at the end of the competition. Scores can be followed here: http://scores.collegesailing.org/s16/pirate-team-race/
Pearce's Points: "We are fielding a team of freshmen and sophomores who have shown a lot of potential already in practice, and this is a good chance for them to get some regatta experience early in the season."
Looking Ahead: Next weekend GW hosts the GW Team Race Regatta with a field of top MAISA teams: Cornell, Fordham, Hobart & William Smith, Naval Academy, and St. Mary's. GW welcomes parents and alumni to attend the regatta and celebrate Parents Weekend with the team. Interested parents and alumni are encouraged to RSVP.
