GW Lacrosse Drops Opener at Delaware, 17-7

NEWARK, Del. -- The George Washington lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Delaware, 17-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Stadium.
Senior Gabbi Hull and junior Bailey Frocier each scored twice to pace the Colonials. Junior Cassidy Shollenberger (1g, 1a) and senior Olivia Boudreau (2a) also had two points apiece, and Boudreau added a team-high three draw controls.
In her first collegiate game, freshman Bridget Cassidy tallied three ground balls, two draw controls and a team-best two caused turnovers. Senior Ellie Glasgow matched Cassidy with a team-high three ground balls.
The first half remained close, with neither team leading by more than two goals. Delaware (2-0) took an early 3-1 lead, but the Colonials responded with four in a row, including back-to-back tallies by Hull, to go up 5-3 midway through the first half. The Blue Hens regained a 7-5 lead with a 4-0 run of their own, and each team scored once more over the final eight minutes as Delaware owned an 8-6 halftime advantage.
The teams traded early goals to start the second half for a 9-7 margin, but the Blue Hens scored the final eight goals of the game to take the 17-7 decision.
Junior Erin Long and sophomore Adele Wise split time in goal, with Long recording four saves in the first half and Wise stopping six shots in the second.
Jamie Schwartz led Delaware with four goals and an assist, while Casey Lyons registered three goals and two helpers for the Blue Hens.
The Colonials return to action next Saturday, Feb.27, when they visit UMBC at 1 p.m.
