ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The GW men's basketball team dropped a tough one, 64-57, on Saturday afternoon to fourth place Saint Bonaventure in an Atlantic 10 clash.
With the defeat, GW falls to 18-7, 7-5 in A-10 play, while the Bonnies improve to 9-3 in conference action. The loss marks the first time all season that the Colonials have dropped consecutive games.
Despite the frigid temperatures outdoors, Patricio Garino remained hot for GW with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting, but the rest of the squad combined to shoot 12-of-41 in a game when the team connected at a .356 clip from the floor. Tyler Cavanaugh continued his streak of scoring in double figures in every game as a Colonial with 17 points, 10 of which came at the free throw line in a 10-of-11 effort at the charity stripe, but no other GW player made a freebie on the day.
Kevin Larsen had a game-high 11 rebounds for GW, while Joe McDonald was one rebound shy with 10 of his own, as GW managed to outrebound the Bonnies 42-35, including 20-14 on the offensive glass. The Colonials could only parlay those 20 offensive caroms into 10 second chance points, however, as Saint Bonaventure held a slight 12-10 edge in second chance points.
The Bonnies' Jaylen Adams led the home team with 19 points, all of which came after halftime in a second half performance in which he did not miss a shot. Adams canned 7-of-7 field goals, including 3-of-3 three-pointers and both free throw attempts in the final 20 minutes of play. Saint Bonaventure also got 15 points from its bench, compared to four from the GW reserves on a pair of second half jumpers from Matt Hart.
The Colonials trailed by five at halftime, 24-19, and by as many as 15 late in the second half (47-32) at the 4:37 mark. From there though GW embarked on a 23-12 run to close within four after a McDonald lay-up with :65 seconds to play. A steal by Yuta Watanabe and subsequent Bonnies' foul put GW at the line with a one-and-one opportunity to pull within two with :49 second to play, but after an errant free throw St. Bona eventually extended its lead back to nine.
GW remains in fifth place in the A-10 standings and next heads to Duquesne on Wednesday night, seeking to snap the mini two-game skid and exact revenge at the home of the Dukes after the Colonials fell in Pittsburgh last season.
