WASHINGTON - George Washington softball head coach James DeFeo has added Hailey Smith to his staff as an assistant coach.
"We are excited to add Hailey to our staff," said DeFeo. "She brings a wealth of top Division I playing experience as well as a detail-oriented and focused coaching style to our program. Hailey has been a top performer at the highest level of NCAA softball, which will help us establish our standard of excellence here at GW."
Smith joins the Colonials after serving as a social media and administrative assistant intern at the Sport and Speed Institute in Virginia upon graduation from the University of Louisville in May 2016.
Smith began a standout college playing career at Louisiana State, helping the Tigers reach NCAA Regional play in 2013 and 2014 before transferring to Louisville for her final two seasons. At Louisville, the infielder quickly established herself as a leader both on and off the field, earning co-captain status in 2016 while landing Second Team All-ACC honors. Smith helped the Cardinals to NCAA Regional appearances in both 2015 and 2016.
The Bristow, Virginia, native also excelled in the classroom, earning Honor Roll distinction throughout her career and landing on the ACC All-Academic Team in 2016.
"I am so grateful for Coach DeFeo and George Washington for letting me be a part of something special that is brewing here in the nation's capital," said Smith. "It feels great to be surrounded by a staff who all have the same vision for GW as well as a history of success. I'm looking forward to seeing the hard work that our student-athletes have been putting in showcased out on the field. I think they, as well as the coaching staff, are excited to shake the A-10 up and establish a winning culture here at GW."
Smith joins DeFeo and assistant coach Hallie Blackney as the staff embarks on its first season leading the Colonials in 2017.
