Interim Head Coach Maurice Joseph
Opening Statement:
"I thought that for a big part of the game we did a great job. We were neck and neck there, a bunch of lead changes. I thought down the stretch there were a couple plays that cost us the offensive rebound. Little plays here and there that I think cost us the game, but again, Tyler said it best: This is a great learning experience for us to understand the value of every single possession throughout the course of the game. If we can lock in for 40 minutes and put 40 minutes together we can be a pretty good team, but we've got to get there. We've got to get there and these young guys have got to learn the value of every shot, of every screen, of every cut, of every pass. It's that crucial. That's what winning or losing comes down to. I think once we can get that, we'll be in good shape."
On Yuta Watanabe matching up with J.J. Frazier despite size discrepancy:
"Yuta is a willing defender. He has the ability to move his feet very well with small guards, he's proved it before. He's done it last year against Monmouth and in the past. We thought that his length would bother Frazier. Again, Yuta was up for the challenge."
On Collin Smith's foul trouble affecting his game plan:
"Yeah a little bit. I think the good thing about us is we have depth in our front court. I think (Arnadlo) Toro did a great job of relieving us from somebody getting two fouls. He came in and got seven points and eight rebounds, he's been really efficient with the minutes he has gotten all season. He's got to be our leader in rebounds per minute. He did a great job. Obviously, we didn't expect Smith to get two fouls there but it's going to happen sometimes, so we have to be able to adjust and Toro came in and did a great job of coming off the bench and giving us a spark as well as Patrick Steeves. They both did really well I thought.
Graduate Student Forward Tyler Cavanaugh
On his takeaway from the game:
"That's a good team, we've just got to keep getting better. It's a few plays here and there; every possession matters. Whether it's free throws or rebounds at the end, we're right there. We've got a lot of young guys, we have to stress the importance of every possession. I think we just have to keep moving forward."
On tonight's three-point shooting:
"Matt (Hart) got hot; that was big. It kept us in the game, especially when a team goes zone like that. We've got to be able to shoot and shoot it well. They were bigger on the inside. We hadn't shot it well yet this year, so it was good to see some go in, but it still hurts knowing that we were one or two possessions away."
On the rebounding struggle:
"They're an SEC team. They're big inside. We didn't box out, at a crucial time, at the end of the game. It cost us. We've got to keep getting rebound. They were big and physical. We've just got to continue to work on that and pride ourselves on the defensive end and inside on the glass and we will win more games."
