This Weekend: A pair of George Washington sailors set their sights on the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Singlehanded National Championship, which will be hosted by Texas A&M University at Galveston from Nov. 4-6.
ICSA Singlehanded Nationals: Senior Brendan Shanahan is competing in the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship for the third straight year, having taken ninth place in each of his previous appearances. Sophomore Riley Legault is making her second straight appearance after finishing sixth as a freshman last year.
The Field: Both the men's and women's championship fields are comprised of 18 sailors from various institutions. GW is one of seven institutions with competitors in both fields, joining Georgetown, Yale, Boston College, Stanford, College of Charleston and TAMU-Galveston.
Martin's Marks: "A large part of Brendan and Riley's training leading up to singlehanded nationals has actually been competing in double-handed regattas," said head coach Billy Martin. "They both are coming off of successful weekends at their respective double-handed conference championships finishing third and sixth. They both seamlessly transition from both disciplines of sailing really well. Because of this I expect their mental game to be sharper than ever, which will be invaluable in the tight fleet of the nation's best sailors. They both grew up sailing lasers so they have a great natural feel for the boat so I think being sharp strategically and tactically around the racecourse will be key.
"I'm happy with how they prepared, and with how the rest of the team pushed hard at practice to make sure they were as prepared as possible. It was a great team effort."
