WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's and women's swimming and diving teams will compete at the annual Magnus Cup Invitational from Friday through Sunday at Cleveland State.
The Colonials will face Division I opponents from host Cleveland State, Colgate and Xavier, Division II opponents from Fairmont State, Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Saginaw Valley State, and NAIA foes from Cumberlands and West Virginia Tech. The women will compete against an additional four Division I programs: Akron, Duquesne, Saint Francis and Youngstown State along with Division II California University of Pennsylvania.
A year ago, GW's men placed third in the field of six, while the women's side finished in fourth out of 10 squads.
The three-day meet will follow a format similar to the Atlantic 10 Championships, with morning preliminaries and afternoon finals. The meet will feature A, B, C and D finals for the women's side and A, B and C finals for the men, each with 10 competitors. A and B finalists will score points. The competition will serve as the biggest test for the Colonials in the fall semester.
GW competes for the first time since both squads notched victories over Howard on Oct. 29. The women's team is off to a hot start in 2016-17, taking a 4-1 record into the Magnus Cup. The men own a 1-3 mark.
The Colonials have seen strong performances already this season, including the program's first NCAA Zones qualifier since diving was reinstated at GW. Sophomore Miranda Simon's career-best mark of 291.4 on the 3-meter boards against Howard made her eligible for the postseason.
Freshman Jackie Torrez earned the Atlantic 10's first Rookie of the Week nod on Oct. 11, and has already posted two top-10 times on the program's all-time list (200 butterfly, 400 IM).
Sophomore Lucy Castro took home CollegeSwimming.com's A-10 Conference Swimmer-of-the-Week honors on Oct. 12, while freshman Alex Cronin earned the same distinction on the men's side after strong starts to the season.
Rookie Andrew Cho has excelled in his young career as well, already breaking into the program's top-10 all-time list in the 200 backstroke.
The Magnus Cup begins on Friday morning with preliminaries, followed by finals at 5 p.m. The meet will conclude on Sunday.
