GW Volleyball Falls at Davidson in Five Sets

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Junior Aaliya Davidson tallied her fifth consecutive double-digit kill effort with a career-high 19 kills on Friday night but the George Washington volleyball team was unable to outlast the Davidson Wildcats, falling in five sets, at Belk Arena. Set scores were 25-21, 20-25, 24-26, 25-23, 12-15.
Davidson also posted a career-high 19 digs for her fifth career double-double to lead the Colonials.
Three other GW players contributed double-digit kills. Sophomore Kelsey Clark notched her sixth career double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Skylar Iott added 10 kills along with eight digs and five block assists and senior Chidima Osuchukwu added 11 kills and three block assists.
GW (6-12, 0-5 A-10) hit .282 in the first set and used a significant 8-0 run midway through the frame to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 win.
Davidson (6-11, 2-2 A-10) responded by limiting the Colonials to a -.034 attack percentage to knot the score at 1-1 with a 25-20 win in the second set.
The Wildcats extended the lead in the match to 2-1 with a 26-24 win in the third set. The Colonials were in prime position to win the frame when they broke an 8-8 tie with an 11-3 run to open up a 19-11 advantage. Davidson answered with an 8-1 run to pull within one point of the lead at 20-19. GW stayed in front and was serving for the set at 24-21, but the Wildcats closed with five straight points to steal a 26-24 win.
The Colonials forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-23 win in the fourth after playing through 12 tie scores and eight lead changes.
The fifth set was a back-and-forth affair that saw nine ties and three lead changes. GW jumped out to an early 6-4 advantage but yielded a 4-1 spurt that allowed Davidson to seize a 8-7 lead. A service error knotted the score at 8-8 before the teams traded points until a deadlock at 10-10. From there, Davidson scored two quick points to force a timeout. Out of the stoppage the Colonials used a kill by Davidson and a service error to tie the match once more at 12-12 and force a Davidson timeout.
The Wildcats scored the final three points out of the timeout to clinch the match with a 15-12 win.
Freshman Jordan Young posted a career-high nine kills on the evening while senior Loren Williams added nine winners and a career-high 17 digs.
GW returns to action on Sunday when it visits VCU at 1:00 p.m. at the Siegel Center. The Rams swept their way past George Mason on Friday night to improve to 12-8 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10.
