WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team won its third straight match, and for the fourth time in its past five outings, in a 3-0 sweep over La Salle on Friday night at the Charles E. Smith Center. Set scores were 25-22, 25-17, 28-26.
GW got 10 kills apiece from both sophomore Kelsey Clark and junior Kristel Moor. Clark added seven digs and two assists while Moor picked up a pair of blocks (one solo, one assist).
The Colonials totaled five team blocks and forced 18 attack errors in the match while benefitting from 12 service errors by La Salle.
GW opened the match in blistering fashion, swinging a torrid .500 with just one attack error in a 25-22 first-set win. The Colonials worked out to a 12-9 lead to open the frame but La Salle countered with a 7-2 run to seize a two-point advantage at 16-14. A service error by the Explorers ignited a comeback as GW scored five of the next six points to take a 19-17 lead and maintained the cushion the rest of the way en route to the 25-22 win.
The momentum carried over into the second set as the Colonials opened on a 9-4 run before extending the lead to 18-11. The Explorers chipped away at the lead, pulling to within four points of the lead at 19-15, but a service error ended the threat. With the Colonials leading 20-15, GW closed on a 5-2 run, including a pair of service aces from freshman Jaimeson Lee and a set-clinching ace from sophomore Alexis Lete, to take a commanding 2-0 lead into the break with a 25-17 win.
The third set was the closest of the match with 12 ties and five lead changes, but GW pulled away in extra points to secure the sweep with a 28-26 win. The Explorers built an 8-4 lead to open the set but GW chipped away at the lead to take an 11-10 lead on a kill by Clark. La Salle responded by opening a five-point lead on the strength of a 6-0 run.
The Colonials responded with a 4-0 run that consisted of a service error, two aces by Lete and a bad set by La Salle, to pull within one point of the lead at 16-15. The teams went back and forth until GW was serving for the match at 24-23 but La Salle stayed alive. GW would serve for the match twice more, but La Salle would not go quietly. Back-to-back kills by junior Aaliya Davidson finalized the result with a 28-26 win.
Freshman Jaimeson Lee facilitated the attack with 27 assists in addition to nine digs and two block assists while GW totaled seven service aces.
Senior Loren Williams paced the back line with 12 digs.
GW looks for its fourth consecutive victory on Saturday night when it hosts Duquesne at the Smith Center. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
