WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's soccer squad wraps the regular season with a pair of matches, beginning with the Colonials' home finale on Thursday afternoon when Rhode Island visits the GW Soccer Field. GW will conclude regular-season play on Sunday at Saint Louis. The Colonials (10-5-2, 4-2-2 A-10) have clinched an Atlantic 10 Championship berth for the fourth consecutive season and sit in sixth place in the league standings entering the week. Rhode Island (5-7-4, 2-4-2 A-10) is 10th in the league and is vying for a spot in the postseason, while Saint Louis is in third place and will battle for a regular-season title in its final two matches. GW looks to bounce back after a close, 1-0, loss to George Mason on Sunday. Senior MacKenzie Cowley leads the team with 19 points (9g, 1a) on the year and is just one score shy of matching a career-high 10 goals set last season. The forward has tallied three goals against A-10 opponents. Redshirt junior Miranda Horn has established herself as one of the top keepers in the league, sitting atop the conference in save percentage (.880) and GAA (0.53), ranking 11th and 13th in the nation in those categories, respectively. Horn's eight shutouts are good for second in the A-10. Rhode Island comes to the District after defeating Duquesne, 2-0, on Sunday. The Rams rank fifth in the league with 15 goals allowed in 2016. Nine different Rams have scored this season and Allyson Reynolds leads the squad with five goals. URI averages 13.5 shots per contest with a .542 shot on goal percentage. Sunday will feature a clash of the top two defenses in the A-10. GW and Saint Louis are tied for a league-best 12 goals allowed on the year. The Billikens hold a slight edge over the Colonials in goals-against average, posting a 0.68 mark to GW's 0.69. Saint Louis leads the league with nine clean sheets on the season. The Billikens are unbeaten in eight of their last nine contests, but were winless last week - falling to first-place Saint Joseph's on Thursday before playing La Salle to a scoreless draw on Sunday. Danielle Tolmais has led the Saint Louis offense with 20 points (9g, 2a) on the season. A year ago, GW downed Rhode Island, 2-1, in double overtime on Cowley's golden goal on the road. Cowley also netted the gamewinner in the Colonials' defeat of Saint Louis, 1-0, in 2015. |
