WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team got an outstanding effort from a trio of freshmen players and rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat UMBC, 3-2, in its non-conference finale on Wednesday night at the Charles E. Smith Center. Set scores were 25-21, 24-26, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13.
GW, which outlasted UMBC through 37 ties and 21 lead changes, has now won three of its last four matches.
The rookie trio of Jordan Young, Jaimeson Lee and Madison Clay all played key roles in the victory. Young finished with a season-high 15 kills on a .462 attack percentage with five digs while Lee, setting her first complete match, finished with a double-double of 48 assists, 11 digs and six blocks (one solo, five assists), all season-high totals.
Clay added a season-high 11 digs on the back line, one of four Colonials with double-digit digs.
Senior Chidima Osuchukwu was a force at the net, finishing with 10 blocks (four solo, six assists) and adding 15 kills (.235) and eight digs.
GW forced nine attack errors and took advantage of five service miscues in a 25-21 first-set win. The Colonials also totaled four of their 14.0 total team blocks in the opening frame.
UMBC rebounded to tie the match with a 26-24 win in the second set. The Retrievers led, 20-17, late in the frame before the Colonials answered with four straight points to seize a one-point lead at 21-20. The teams traded points until a 23-23 deadlock and UMBC closed on a 3-1 spurt to tie the match at 1-1.
UMBC used a substantial run to erase a third-set deficit and take a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-23, third-set victory. GW led 16-9 but UMBC flipped the script with a 14-1 run, which included six service aces, to take a commanding 23-17 lead. GW was unable to recover.
GW's defense played a big role in tying the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set. The Colonials forced five attack errors, yielded just five kills and held a 20-14 advantage in digs to win the set. Young and Osuchukwu combined for 11 of GW's 16 winners in the fourth.
The defensive momentum carried over to the fifth as GW limited UMBC once again to a .000 (6k-6e-24a) attack percentage. GW led 7-3 early but UMBC battled back to take the lead at 10-9. The Colonials responded out of a timeout with three straight points to take a 12-10 lead. The Retrievers rallied with three in a row to pull ahead by one, but the Colonials got a pair of kills from Osuchukwu as part of a match-closing 3-0 spurt.
GW will host La Salle (Fri., 7 p.m.) and Duquesne (Sat., 7 p.m.) this weekend in a critical pair of Atlantic 10 matches at the Smith Center.
