GW Volleyball Stopped by VCU, 3-1

WASHINGTON - Junior Aaliya Davidson led all players with 15 kills on Friday night but the George Washington volleyball team was unable to hold down visiting VCU in a 3-1 loss at the Charles E. Smith Center. Set scores were 21-25, 19-25, 25-21, 18-25.
Davidson's 15 kills came with 13 digs for her third straight double-double and sixth of her career. She also added a career-high tying five block assists in addition to one solo rejection.
Sophomore Kelsey Clark posted nine kills and eight digs while senior Chidima Osuchukwu added nine kills and six blocks (one solo, five assists).
VCU held an 11-3 advantage in service aces for the match while the two teams posted equal amounts of digs (50) and team blocks (9.0). The Rams won the kills battle, 48-45, while hitting .203 (48k-22a-128a) for the match compared to .122 (45k-29e-131a) for the Colonials.
The first set was closely contested but VCU pulled away late, turning a two-point lead at 16-14 into a five-point advantage at 23-18. The Colonials were able to pull within three at 23-20, but VCU scored two of the last three points to clinch the first set by a score of 25-21.
VCU hit .360 in the second set with just two attack errors en route to a 25-19 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
GW responded in the third set with a 25-21 win. The Colonials opened on a 9-3 run but the Rams were able to trim the deficit to just one at 11-10. GW answered with four straight points to open up a five-point lead and maintained the advantage for the rest of the set.
VCU opened the fourth on a 6-1 run and never trailed en route to the match-clinching 25-18 win. GW got as close as three points late in the frame, but the Rams closed on a 5-1 spurt to end the match.
GW continues its homestand against Davidson on Saturday night. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
