FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Washington volleyball team stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to knock off George Mason, 3-2, on Friday night to earn a point in the Revolutionary Rivalry standings. Set scores were 23-25, 15-25, 25-17, 25-23, 15-9.
GW now leads George Mason, 2-0, in the year-long competition that encompasses 16 common sports between the two institutions.
The Colonials got double-digit kills from a trio of players on Friday night, led by junior Aaliya Davidson's 15-kill, 12-dig double-double. Senior Chidima Osuchukwu added 12 kills (.375) and eight blocks (two solo, six assists) while Skylar Iott put down 11 winners with 15 digs and one block assist.
The first set featured multiple runs by both teams before George Mason escaped with a 25-23 win. GW held a 16-12 lead midway through the frame but the Patriots answered with a 8-1 run to seize a 20-17 lead. The Colonials would not go quietly, scoring five straight points to pull ahead by two at 22-20, but Mason countered with a set closing 5-1 lead to take the set.
The Patriots opened the second set on a 4-0 run and never trailed en route to a 25-15 win to take a commanding 2-0 in the match.
GW limited Mason to a .038 attack percentage in the third set and forced six attack errors in a 25-17 win. The Colonials held a narrow one-point lead at 11-10 but erupted on a 7-3 run to extend the lead to 18-13 and coasted the rest of the way to get on the board.
The Colonials fought through 11 ties and five lead changes to tie the match in the fourth set with a 25-23 win. The frame was all square at 20-20 before Mason pulled ahead by one, but a kill by Iott followed by an attack error put GW on top by one. The Patriots countered with consecutive kills to pull ahead 23-22, but a kill by Osuchukwu tied the match ahead of a service from Iott to put the Colonials at set point. Osuchukwu and senior Emily Clemens then combined on a set-clinching block to tie the match at 2-2.
Mason opened the fifth set on a 4-1 run but GW was able to chip away and knot the score at 8-8. From there, the Colonials caught fire and closed the match on a 7-1 run. GW committed just one attack error in the decisive fifth set and hit .364 en route to the win.
Clemens directed the attack with 44 assists while adding nine digs and two block assists on the defensive side. Sophomore Kelsey Clark added eight kills and eight digs.
GW opens a six-match homestand next Friday when it hosts VCU at the Charles E. Smith Center. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
