GW Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision to Rhode Island

WASHINGTON - Junior Aaliya Davidson extended her double-digit kill streak to four straight games with 14 errorless kills but the George Washington volleyball team fell to visiting Rhode Island, 3-0, on Saturday night at the Charles E. Smith Center. Set scores were 23-25, 22-25, 19-25.
Davidson's 14 winners came on 27 attempts for a .519 attack percentage. She was joined in double-digits by senior Chidima Osuchukwu, who put down 11 kills (.368) along with three blocks (one solo, two assists).
GW (6-11, 0-4 A-10) swung a season-best .319 (41k-12e-91a) but at the same time allowed Rhode Island (9-7, 4-0 A-10) to swing .404 (49k-11e-94a), the second-highest swing percentage yielded by the Colonials this season.
Rhode Island was led by Layne Self, who swung a torrid .857 with 13 kills in 14 attempts. Audrey Castro added 14 kills (.360) as the Rams won their fifth match in a row.
The first set saw featured 13 ties and eight lead changes, the last of which came when three straight Rhode Island points broke a 17-17 deadlock late in the frame. The Colonials were able to get back to within one point of the lead when they trailed 23-22, but two kills by Self down the stretch sealed the 25-23 first-set win for Rhode Island.
A similar flow played out in the second set as Rhode Island broke a 17-17 stalemate with four straight points to pull ahead, 21-17. GW answered with three points in a row to pull within one at 21-20 and force a Ram timeout. Out of the stoppage, Rhode Island closed on a 4-2 run to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-22 win.
Rhode Island used a substantial run down the stretch to close out the match in the third set. Leading by one at 18-17 following three straight GW points, the Rams erupted for a match-clinching 7-2 run to clinch the sweep.
GW will look to end its seven-match losing streak next weekend when it travels to Davidson (Fri., 7 p.m.) and VCU (Sun., 1 p.m.) for key Atlantic 10 matches.
