WASHINGTON -- The George Washington men's basketball returned home on Saturday night and treated a national television audience to a shooting clinic in a 91-64 rout of A-10 foe Duquesne to improve to 13-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play, with an unblemished home record of 10-0.
GW canned a season-high 13 3-pointers in 27 tries on the night, including a personal career-high and team season-high six triples from Tyler Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh posted his first career 30-point, 10-rebound game with his career-best 30 point night (11-of-16 FG, 6-10 3PT, 2-2 FT). Four of his 3-pointers and 18 points came in the game's first 20 minutes.
Cavanaugh and Kevin Larsen, who also set a career high with 25 points to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds, were dominant in combining for 55 points and 21 boards. The duo made 19-of-28 field goals between them and 10-of-12 at the free throw line.
As a team, GW regained its stroke at the charity stripe with a 20-of-24 (.833) performance, and executed well with an 18:7 assist-to-turnover ratio. Behind Cavanaugh and Larsen, GW also out-rebounded the Dukes 50-28.
The Colonials never trailed and led by as many as 34 in the second half after blitzing the Dukes from deep coming out of the break. GW parlayed a 41-27 halftime edge into the 27-point final margin on the strength of eight second-half trifectas.
Graduate transfer Alex Mitola was also big in the 3-point barrage with a 4-of-6 night from behind the arc, while also making all three freebies and accumulating four assists in his season-high 15-point night. Paul Jorgensen's five assists paced GW in 25 minutes off the bench.
Cavanaugh helped GW take control in the first half, setting off a 9-0 run when it was tied 16-all with a 3-pointer, and another following three free throws from Larsen. Cavanaugh's fourth three of the first half gave the Colonials a 30-18 lead with 4:18 before the break and they led by double digits the rest of the way.
Coming out of the locker room, Cavanaugh drilled a 3 just 11 seconds into the second half and Larsen hit his first 3 of the season moments later. The onslaught continued as Cavanaugh, Matt Hart and Mitola made 3s on three straight GW possessions, stretching it to a 29-point lead with 13:10 to play, and the Colonials cruised from there.
Mar'Qywell Jackson and Derrick Colter registered 10 points apiece to lead Duquesne in a game that saw GW hold the Dukes to a .364 field goal percentage (20-of-55).
GW suits up next at Massachusetts on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. The contest will once again be televised nationally by ASN; regionally on CSN.
