BOSTON - Jillian Winstanley won the both the vault and all-around titles to lead the George Washington gymnastics team to a season-opening tri-meet victory over New Hampshire and Rutgers on Saturday night at the Little Boston Invitational at the Hynes Convention Center.
The Colonials totaled 196.175 to top East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rival New Hampshire (195.10) and Rutgers (193.10). GW posted team event scores of 48.95 on vault, 49.175 on uneven bars, 49.175 on balance beam and 48.875 on floor exercise.
Winstanley picked up event titles in both the all-around (39.35) and vault (career-high tying 9.925). She added marks of 9.775 on balance beam (t-10th) and 9.775 on floor exercise (t-10th). The all-around score of 39.35 is the 12th time in her career that she has eclipsed the 39.00 threshold.
Sophomore Cami Drouin-Allaire picked up right where she left off following a National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC/W) All-America campaign as a freshman. The Shoreham, New York, native finished second in the all-around with a score of 39.30. She tied for second on the vault with a score of 9.90, her seventh career routine of that score or better. She added scores of 9.80 on uneven bars (t-8th), 9.775 on balance beam (t-10th) and 9.825 on floor exercise (2nd).
Junior Alex DeMoura, competing in her first meet since February 14 of last season, returned to the all-around lineup and a scored a career-high tying 39.15 for fourth place. She finished in a four-way tie for the balance beam title with a career-high score of 9.875 and added marks of 9.725 on vault (t-7th), 9.825 on uneven bars (t-5th) and 9.725 on floor exercise (T-9th).
Sophomore Sara Mermelstein also tied for the balance beam title by scoring 9.875. She also competed on vault (9.525, 18th) and floor exercise (9.775, t-6th).
Junior Chelsea Raineri put forth a solid meet by competing in three events. She scored 9.825 on vault (t-4th), 9.80 on uneven bars (t-8th) and 9.80 on floor exercise (t-3rd).
Sophomore Liz Pfeiler also made a podium appearance on Saturday night, tying for third place on the uneven bars with 9.85. She added a fifth-place performance on balance beam with an identical mark.
A duo of Colonials made their collegiate debuts at the event. Sophomore Alex Zois, returning from an injury that sidelined for all of 2015, scored 9.775 on uneven bars (10th) and 9.80 on balance beam (9th). Freshman Julia McLaughlin appeared on vault and scored 9.525.
GW will welcome Temple, Cornell, Penn and North Carolina on January 17 for its home opener at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational at 2:00 p.m.
