WASHINGTON - The George Washington gymnastics team totaled 13 podium appearances, including a sweep of the all-around, and scored 195.425 to top the opposition and win its fourth straight Lindsey Ferris Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.
GW (6-0) tallied team scores of 48.275 on vault, 49.10 on uneven bars, 48.75 on balance beam and 49.30 on floor exercise in its home opener. Cornell finished in second place with 194.025, followed by Temple (191.375), Penn (190.625) and North Carolina (188.925).
"I was a little concerned because we were late to the party after starting out slow on vault, traditionally a very strong event for us," said Head Coach Margie-Foster Cunningham. "I was pleased with the resiliency to bounce back and finish strong on bars, beam and floor. It shows that, 'lets go to work and get this done' mentality."
GW's 49.10 on uneven bars was one-tenth of a point off tying the program record of 49.20.
"We have been working very hard on gaining as many tenths as possible on our handstands and stick dismounts, and the team is starting to grasp that," said Coach Foster-Cunningham. "They are starting to possess the moment and not rush. Stay in the moment and really go after it, and that is how we are scoring so well on bars."
Sophomore Cami Drouin-Allaire won the all-around title with a score of 39.30, the second straight week she has posted that total. She tied for the floor exercise title with an outstanding 9.90. Additionally, she tied for second place on uneven bars with a career-high tying 9.875, tied for third on balance beam with a 9.75 and added a 9.775 on vault (t-3rd).
Sophomore Jillian Winstanley recorded her 13th-career 39.00 or better in the all-around when she claimed second place with 39.225. The reigning East Atlantic Gymnastic League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Week, Winstanley finished in second place on the vault with a 9.825, tied for second with Drouin-Allaire on the uneven bars with 9.875 and added marks of 9.70 on balance beam (t-7th) and 9.825 on floor exercise (t-5th).
Junior Alex DeMoura completed the all-around sweep for the Colonials by placing third with 38.95. She shared the balance beam title with a score of 9.775 in addition to marks of 9.575 on vault (t-18th), 9.775 on uneven bars (t-6th) and 9.825 on floor exercise (t-5th).
Sophomore Liz Pfeiler tied with DeMoura in taking the balance beam title with a score of 9.775 and also performed well on uneven bars, tying for fourth place with 9.80.
Sophomore Sara Mermelstein also provided key scores to GW's totals after finishing in a tie for third place on balance beam (9.75) and taking four place on floor exercise (9.85).
Junior Chelsea Raineri tied with Drouin-Allaire for the floor exercise championship with an outstanding mark of 9.90. The score ties a career high and is the fourth time in her career she has achieved that mark. Raineri added scores of 9.775 on uneven bars (t-6th) and 9.25 on vault.
The sophomore duo of Madeline Seibold and Alex Zois also contributed to GW's banner day. Seibold hit routines of 9.80 on floor exercise (t-7th) and 9.525 on vault while Zois, competing in her first career home meet, posted 9.775 on uneven bars (t-6th) and 9.625 on balance beam (t-14th).
The Lindsey Ferris Invitational is now in its ninth season and honors the legacy of the former gymnastics alumna. Dozens of GW gymnastics alums packed the Smith Center stands to cheer on the Colonials to victory on Sunday afternoon.
"Everybody is so proud to be a GW gymnastics alum," said Coach Foster-Cunningham. "It gives me chills to see their excitement and pride when they come back and how much they value their experience here at GW. Lindsey exemplifies everything that a GW gymnast is about. It is great to honor Lindsey and remember her.
GW will return to action on Saturday when it visits EAGL rival Pittsburgh for a quad meet against the Panthers, New Hampshire and Temple. The meet will be held at Fitzgerald Field House, the site of the 2016 EAGL Championship.
