WASHINGTON -- The George Washington men's basketball teams closes out its January home slate on Thursday as Richmond visits the Charles E. Smith Center for a nationally-televised game on ESPNU. Tip is set for 9 p.m.
The Colonials had nearly a week off following their last game, a 62-58 win over Rhode Island last Friday at the Smith Center. GW overcame an 18-point deficit in the victory, matching the largest comeback since the Colonials roared back for an 88-85 overtime win over UNC Wilmington in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
GW has been at its best at home this season, sporting a perfect 11-0 record and standing as just one of two A-10 teams with an unblemished home mark (Davidson, 10-0). Since 2013-14, the Colonials are 37-3 (.925) at home which is the best winning percentage of any A-10 team on their home floor.
Tyler Cavanaugh continues to pace the Colonials offensively, averaging 17.0 ppg on a team-best .538 shooting percentage from the field, while also connecting at a .426 clip from 3-point range (7th in the A-10). The junior is also averaging 7.3 rebounds per game and shooting .856 at the free throw line (6th in the A-10).
As a team, the Colonials have made a habit of getting to the charity stripe and taking advantage of their chances. GW is hitting .757 at the line this season, which ranks 12th nationally, and in the win over Rhode Island connected on 25-of-30 (.833) attempts.
GW owns a 61-32 advantage in the series history vs. Richmond which comes into Thursday's game with a 10-8 mark, including 2-4 in the A-10. The teams split a pair of meetings last season, with GW taking a 73-70 double-overtime thriller at home, before the Spiders held court with a 56-48 victory in Richmond.
In the double-overtime win at home, GW was led by Kevin Larsen who turned in a monster double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Joe McDonald added 13 points, including the clutch go-ahead three-pointer with 1:16 left in the second extra session, and five rebounds.
Following Thursday's game, GW returns to the road though won't have to go far as it heads to George Mason on Sunday at noon. The game will be televised on NBCSN.
