WASHINGTON -- The George Washington women's basketball team visits Atlantic 10 rival Davidson for the first time ever on Wednesday evening. Tipoff from Belk Arena is set for 7 p.m.
Reigning A-10 champion GW sits alone atop the league standings at a perfect 7-0, one game ahead of St. Bonaventure and Saint Louis, which are both 6-1. The Colonials have won 15 straight games against conference opponents dating to Feb. 15, the sixth-longest active streak in Division I.
At 17-3 overall, GW has equaled the second-best record through 20 games in program history (two teams went 18-2), and their current 12-game winning streak is tied for the program's sixth-longest ever.
The Colonials defeated Revolutionary Rival George Mason, 82-68, on Friday afternoon behind 55 points combined from junior Caira Washington, sophomore Kelli Prange and graduate student Lauren Chase. Washington (20 points, 12 rebounds) and Prange (17 points, 12 rebounds) both posted double-doubles, while Chase was just shy with 18 points and eight assists.
GW continues to dominate the glass, leading the nation in rebounding (51.5 rpg) and ranking second in rebound margin (+17.0 rpg). The Colonials have won the battle of the boards in all 20 games this season and in 51-of-53 since the start of the 2014-15 campaign.
Four Colonials are averaging double-figure points against A-10 opponents -- senior Jonquel Jones (17.0 ppg), Washington (12.7 ppg), Chase (10.7 ppg) and junior Hannah Schaible (10.7 ppg) -- as GW ranks second in the league in scoring in conference games (71.7 ppg) and is tops in scoring margin (+16.4 ppg). In addition, the Colonials have allowed just 55.3 points per game in A-10 contests, ranking third in the league, and are tops in field goal percentage defense (.330) and 3-point defense (.198).
Wednesday's game marks the second-ever meeting between GW and Davidson, which joined the Atlantic 10 in 2014-15. In the inaugural matchup, which occurred last February, GW produced its best defensive effort in four years, holding Davidson to 35 points on 26.3 percent shooting in a 52-35 victory. Jones posted a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Shannon Cranshaw scored 12 points with four 3-pointers. Alex Long led the Wildcats with 11 points.
Davidson (9-11, 3-4 A-10) is coming off a 78-62 loss at Rhode Island on Saturday. Hannah Early scored 19 points and Mackenzie Latt had 18 while Dakota Dukes posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Latt (14.7 ppg) and Dukes (14.2 ppg) rank eighth and 10th in the A-10, respectively, in scoring, and Dukes is also 10th in the conference in rebounding (7.2 rpg) and second in field goal percentage (.534). Early, who is averaging 10.9 points per game, is one of the top 3-point threats in the conference, ranking sixth with 2.0 treys per contest.
