Following two busy weekends that saw the George Washington sailing team compete in a total of seven regattas, the Colonials have a relatively light but important weekend of competition ahead with singlehanded events at Navy and the US Merchant Marine Academy on Sept. 26-27.
The highlight of the weekend will be the Faye Bennet Regatta for the MAISA Women's Singlehanded Championship at Navy, where sophomore Taylor Brimberg and freshmen Sarah Alexander and Riley Legault will represent the Colonials. The conference championship for individual women's competition, the regatta awards a spot in the ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championship in November to the top four finishers.
"Taylor is competing for the second time in this regatta, after finishing 12th last year, and Riley and Sarah are both rookies but have very strong singlehanded sailing backgrounds," said Head Coach John Pearce. "Between the three of them, we will be right in the mix for one of the four coveted qualifying spots for nationals. It will be a very exciting weekend."
At the MAISA Laser Eliminator held at the US Merchant Marine Academy, GW will look to add a third qualifier for the MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship in October. Junior Colin Kennedy will be the sole competitor for GW and will look for a top-six finish that would see him join fellow juniors Brendan Shanahan and Dan DelBello in the Men's Singlehanded Championship which will be held Oct. 10-11.
"Colin is an excellent singlehanded sailor and we are hopeful that he'll finish in the top six and join Brendan and Dan in the conference championship on October 10-11," said Peace.
