GW Volleyball Downs Lehigh, 3-0, to Open Weekend

PITTSBURGH - The George Washington volleyball team posted a season-high attack percentage in a 3-0 sweep of Lehigh in the opening match of the Panther Invitational on Friday afternoon at Fitzgerald Field House. Set scores were 25-23, 25-17, 25-18.
GW (8-4) swung .330 (43k-14e-88a) en route to its seventh win in its last eight outings. The Colonials posted seven team blocks and limited Lehigh (7-5) to a .124 (32k-20e-97a) attack percentage, the second-lowest swing rate yielded to an opponent this season.
The Colonials opened the first set on a 9-3 run and held the opposition at bay until an 18-13 lead midway through the frame. The Mountain Hawks roared back on the strength of an 8-2 run to take a one-point lead at 21-20 and force a GW timeout. The teams exchanged points out of the break until a tie at 23-23, but consecutive kills by senior Maggie Skjelbred and freshman Kelsey Clark clinched the 25-23 win.
GW hit a torrid .542 with just two attack errors in the second set en route to a 25-17 victory. The Colonials' defense forced eight attack errors while limiting Lehigh to a .000 attack percentage to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was the closest of the match. GW built a 7-4 lead to start the frame but Lehigh roared back on the strength of a 9-2 run to take a 13-9 lead. After a timeout, the Colonials responded with eight consecutive points as part of a 12-3 run to take a 21-16 lead. GW would concede just two more points the rest of the way and clinched the match with a 25-18 win.
Clark and junior Chidima Osuchukwu both finished with 12 kills to pace the Colonials. Osuchukwu's 12 winners came without an error on a .571 attack percentage. She added five block assists.
Skjelbred finished with six kills (.455) and added two block assists.
Senior Jordan Timmer facilitated the attack with 31 assists along with six digs and three block assists.
Junior Maddie Brown was on point at the service line, totaling three service aces. She has posted seven aces across the past two matches.
Senior Maddy Doyle paced the back line with a match-high 19 digs.
The Colonials will play a doubleheader on Saturday against Bowling Green (10 a.m.) and host Pittsburgh (7 p.m.).
