With their first weekend of competition in the books after last weekend's four-regatta slate, GW sailing is back in action for another busy weekend, Sept. 19 â€" Sept. 20, for regattas in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York.
"The team has been doing a fantastic job at practice so far this season," said Head Coach John Pearce. "I'm really excited to see what we're capable of this weekend in competition."
At the Hatch Brown Trophy hosted by MIT, seven sailors will represent GW. Junior skipper Brendan Shanahan, crewed by freshman crew Mercedes McPhee, will race in A Division, sophomore skipper Kai Friesecke and freshman crew Emma Mendenhall will handle B Division duties, and sophomore Sam White and freshman Alexandra Fayer will skipper and crew, respectively, for GW's C Division entry. Senior Henry Young will serve as an alternate crew.
In Connecticut at the Stu Nelson Trophy women's competition, sophomores Miranda Bakos and Belle Strachan will race in A Division, with sophomore India Johnstone skippering B, crewed by junior Gabriella Malek. Senior Hannah McNomee will act as alternate skipper in the event hosted by Connecticut College.
"The Hatch Brown and Stu Nelson regattas are our first inter-conference regattas of the fall, and are a great chance for us to go up against the best teams in the nation at two classic NEISA venues," said Pearce. "The competition will be top notch, and conditions are often challenging on the rivers of New England, so it's a good test for us."
In New York at the Maritime Fall Open hosted by SUNY Maritime, freshman Andrew Sheerin will be at the reins of the A Division entry, with classmate Alexandra DelBello aboard as crew. B Division will be skippered by freshman Derek Poon-Tip, crewed by sophomore Shira Golub.
"The Maritime Open is a solid regional MAISA regatta, and a good chance for our younger players to gain valuable experience at a venue with notoriously tricky current," said Pearce.
