GW Volleyball Sweeps Georgetown, 3-0

WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack to earn a straight-sets sweep over Georgetown on Wednesday evening at McDonough Arena. Set scores were 25-23, 25-22, 25-19.
GW (7-4) had six players finish with at least five kills on the evening, led by junior Loren Williams' 11 errorless winners. She swung .440 on the night with two block assists to pace the attack.
Freshman Kelsey Clark and junior Chidima Osuchukwu also had efficient evenings offensively. Clark finished with 10 kills on a .348 attack percentage while Osuchukwu put down six kills (.294) with six blocks (two solo, four assists).
The first set was a back-and-forth affair with each team making substantial runs to keep the score close until the Colonials pulled away late for a 25-23 win. GW opened with an 8-3 run before the Hoyas responded with a 7-1 rally to take a one-point lead at 10-9. The Colonials scored the next six points to retake the lead at 15-10 before extending the advantage to 17-13. Georgetown responded with four straight points to tie the frame at 17-17 and force a GW timeout.
After trading points out of the break, the Colonials went on a 4-2 spurt to pull ahead, 22-20, but the Hoyas responded with three straight points to retake the lead at 23-22 and force another GW timeout. Sophomore Kristel Moor put down a kill to tie the score once more at 23-23 and then combined on a block with Osuchukwu to put the Colonials on top, 24-23. A kill by Clark clinched the frame and a 1-0 lead for GW.
The Colonials committed just one attack error in the first set while swinging .267 (13k-1e-45a) with four blocks. GW also tallied four service aces in the first set, with three by junior Maddie Brown.
GW hit .379 in the second set with just four attack errors and staved off a late rally to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-22 win. The Colonials opened on a 7-3 run and led for the entire set, but Georgetown closed to within two points at 24-22 before a kill by senior Maggie Skjelbred ended the threat and clinched the set.
GW dominated the third set, racing out to a 10-3 lead en route to a 25-19 win. The Colonials hit a match-best .312 (14k-4e-32a) in the final frame while limiting Georgetown to a .057 (10k-8e-35a) swing percentage. The frontline produced four team blocks in the third to aid in the victory.
Senior Jordan Timmer totaled 32 assists to facilitate the attack and added five errorless kills and one block assist.
Moor added five kills and four block assists while Skjelbred connected on five winners in addition to five blocks (two solo, three assists).
GW hit .311 (42k-9e-106a) for the match while holding advantages in total blocks (11-5) and service aces (6-5).
Brown finished with a match-high four aces while Clark and Skjelbred each added one.
Senior Maddy Doyle led GW with 14 digs.
GW will conclude its non-conference tournament slate at this weekend's Panther Invitational, hosted by Pittsburgh. The Colonials open the tournament against Lehigh on Friday at 4:30 p.m. before a doubleheader on Saturday against Bowling Green (10 a.m.) and Pittsburgh (7 p.m.).
