GW Volleyball Splits on Final Day of Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Junior Chidima Osuchukwu was named to the All-Tournament Team as the George Washington volleyball team split two matches on the final day of the Michigan Invitational on Saturday at Cliff Keen Arena.
GW (1-2) defeated West Virginia in the first match of the day by scores of 25-15, 25-12, 25-18 before falling in five sets to Oakland in the night cap, 25-20, 25-13, 17-25, 22-25, 11-15.
Osuchukwu totaled 43 kills across 12 sets in the season-opening tournament. She averaged 3.58 kills per set while hitting .258 with 14 total blocks (four solo, 10 assists).
The Colonials hit .371 (38k-13e-78a) in the 3-0 sweep of West Virginia. Osuchukwu led the squad with 12 kills against just one error for a .524 attack percentage and added four blocks (one solo, three assists) to pace the offense.
GW started the first set on a 7-2 run and never looked back en route to a 25-20 win. The momentum carried over to the second set as GW hit .458 (13k-2e-24a) and limited the Mountaineers to a .037 (9k-8e-27a) attack percentage in a 25-12 win in the second set.
The Colonials completed the sweep by committing just five attack errors in the third set, producing a 25-18 win for the team's first victory of the 2015 season.
Sophomore Kristel Moor (8k-1e-16a) and senior Maggie Skjelbred (7k-1e-11a) each had efficient matches to contribute to the victory while senior Jordan Timmer facilitated the attack with 34 assists in addition to five digs and two block assists.
The Colonials tallied eight service aces in the match, led by three from Timmer and two each from freshmen Kelsey Clark and Hanna Justesen.
In the nightcap, GW raced out to a 2-0 lead over Oakland before the Golden Grizzlies stormed back to win the match in five sets.
Osuchukwu led all players in the match with 21 kills on 45 attempts (.222) and added six blocks (two solo, four assists) and two digs.
Clark added nine errorless kills (.450), five service aces and four digs while Timmer posted her 16th career double-double with 51 assists and 13 digs.
GW will host No. 13 Oregon in its home opener on Tuesday evening at the Charles E. Smith Center at 7 p.m.
