GW Volleyball Falls at Michigan, 3-1, in Season Debut

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Three players posted double-digit kills, led by sophomore Kristel Moor's 11 winners, but the George Washington volleyball team fell in its season debut, 3-1, at Michigan on Friday evening at Cliff Keen Arena. Set scores were 17-25, 15-25, 25-23, 22-25.
Juniors Chidima Osuchukwu and Loren Williams each added 10 kills to join Moor in double figures as GW (0-1) opened its 40th anniversary season with its first-ever meeting against Michigan (1-0).
Senior Jordan Timmer posted her 15th career double-double with 42 assists and 11 digs to facilitate the offense.
GW opened the first set on a 7-3 run before Michigan stormed back to take a 9-8 lead. The Wolverines went on to hit .371 (16k-3e-35a) in the frame en route to a 25-17 victory.
Michigan forced 11 attack errors in the second set to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-15 win.
The Colonials rebounded by hitting .262 (17k-6e-42a) to take the third set, 25-23. GW trailed 20-16 late in the frame but responded with a 9-3 spurt to clinch the win. Senior Maddy Doyle went on a run at the service line as GW scored four straight points to end the set.
Michigan opened the fourth set on an 11-6 run but the Colonials responded with seven consecutive points to grab a 13-11 lead. The Wolverines answered with a 7-2 run to move ahead 18-15 before extending the lead to 23-18. GW would not back down, scoring four of the next five points and staving off match point three times, but the Wolverines eventually clinched the match on a service error.
Doyle finished with a match-high 24 digs to go with three assists and two aces. Osuchukwu added four blocks (one solo, four assist) to her 10 kills.
Freshman Kelsey Clark posted nine kills and eight digs in her collegiate debut while senior Maggie Skjelbred added seven kills and two block assists.
GW will play a doubleheader on Saturday with matches against West Virginia (11 a.m.) and Oakland (5:30 p.m.).
