WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's tennis team has added two student-athletes to the 2015-16 roster, third-year head coach Greg Munoz announced. Diana Kussainova and Victoria Kogan will make up the squad's freshmen class.
Kussainova, born in Almaty, Kazakhstan, attended Boca Raton Community High School in Florida. Kussainova has excelled in USTA Open tournaments, most recently winning the Girls' 18 Singles Indian Spring Country Club Level 7 tournament in 2014 and the Girls' 18 Singles Clayton Feig Memorial Super Series Level 6 tournament in 2012. In 2012, Kussainova defeated Russia's Anna Koval, who was No. 81 in the world ITF rankings and No. 734 in the WTA at the time of the match.
"Diana has a lot of talent and can compete with anyone," said Head Coach Munoz. "I am looking for her to play in the top three of our lineup."
A native of Columbia, Maryland, Kogan was a three-year standout for the Atholton High School Raiders. The two-time Howard County Player of the Year (2012, 2015) led her squad to County Cup crowns in 2012 and 2013 while capping a stellar freshman campaign with the 2012 county and region girls singles titles. Kogan repeated as regional champion in 2013 and finished second in the girls state tournament. In 2014, Kogan decided to forego her junior high school season to focus on USTA competition, but returned in 2015 to earn her third regional title, make her second state finals appearance and claim team MVP honors while serving as squad captain.
Academically, Kogan graduated within the top two percent of her class and is a member of both the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. As a Colonial, Kogan looks to major in biomedical engineering.
"Victoria is a bonus this year," said Head Coach Munoz. "She is extremely bright and has some big wins over highly ranked USTA players. I am looking to Victoria to compete for the No. 6 spot on our team. She is a very steady player, which makes her tough to beat."
