The George Washington sailing team will compete for the women's sailing national title from May 25-28 in Newport, Rhode Island, as was announced yesterday by the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA).
The College Sailing / Sperry Women's Nationals is a four-day event that includes the Women's National Semifinal Championship on May 25-26 in which 28 schools compete to see which 18 will go on to the finals. The Championship regatta follows on May 27-28, 2015.
"It's awesome that our team has the chance to compete for the women's national championship this year," said Head Coach John Pearce. "We've been competing at a high level all year on the women's circuit, and cracked the Sailing World women's national rankings for the first time this spring. Being at the nationals and going toe-to-toe with the best of the best is a great opportunity for us!"
By virtue of GW's 7th place finish at the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Women's Championships on April 25-26, the Colonials earned the ICSA Sperry Women's National Semifinal berth when MAISA was granted an additional spot by the ICSA. Previously GW narrowly missed on the top-6 criteria for a spot at nationals, but claimed the first alternate position.
GW will vie for sailing supremacy with Georgetown, Navy, St. Mary's College of Maryland, Old Dominion, Hobart and William Smith, Cornell, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Wisconsin Milwaukee, Boston College, Coast Guard, Yale, Brown, Vermont, Dartmouth, Bowdoin, Rhode Island, Oregon, Western Washington, Stanford, California at Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Hawaii, College of Charleston, Eckerd, South Florida and Texas A&M Galveston.
Competing for the Colonials will be Miranda Bakos (Fr)., Alex Hitchcock (Sr.), India Johnstone (Fr.), Gabriella Malek (So.), Hannah McNomee (Jr.), Meagan Murphy (Sr.), Madison Oleson (So.), Kia Olsson (Fr.), Maria Sinagra (Jr.), Belle Strachan (Fr.) and Jennifer Wilson (Sr.).
