WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team opens a six-game homestand on Wednesday as Atlantic 10 rival George Mason visits the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for a Revolutionary Rivalry doubleheader.
Senior Victoria Valos leads the Colonials with a .369 average and a team-best 30 RBIs. The co-captain is just six hits away from her 200th career hit, a plateau reached just one other time in program history - by Olympic bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor ('07), who finished with a program-best 202 in her Hall of Fame career.
Junior Carlee Gray (.368) is in a three-way tie for first in the conference with four triples, while sophomore Megan Linn leads the A-10 with 19 stolen bases this spring and ranks 31st in the nation in stolen bases per game (0.59). As a team the Buff and Blue sit atop the conference and are eighth in the country with an average of 2.28 swipes per contest.
In the circle, freshman Sarah Costlow has tallied a team-high 11 triumphs for GW this season and has tossed the most innings (127.0) in the conference. Sophomore Paige Kovalsky (6-1) notched a trio of wins last week and holds opposing batters to a team-best .250 average. Kovalsky has also contributed at the plate, batting .310 on the season with 16 RBIs.
For the Patriots, Brooke Blankenship leads the team in average (.347) and RBIs (20) and is tied for the team lead in runs scored (20) with Casey Price (.298, 15 RBIs).
In the circle, George Mason's Casey Herring (6-6) claims the most victories, while Christina Gabriele (4-7) holds opponents to a team-best .232 average.
The Colonials trail the Patriots, 12-7, in the all-time series, most recently dropping both ends of a doubleheader last season. A point in the Revolutionary Rivalry standings is also up for grabs on Wednesday. GW currently holds a 7-5 lead in the year-long contest.
First pitch for the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m. at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
