GW Lacrosse Ends Season With 18-11 Loss at UMass

AMHERST, Mass. - The George Washington lacrosse team fell to Atlantic 10 leader Massachusetts, 18-11, in its season finale on Sunday afternoon at McGuirk Stadium.
In the final game of her career, senior Rachel Mia tallied a game-high five points on three goals and two assists and added three ground balls, and sophomore Michaela Lynch also notched a hat trick.
GW (6-10, 4-4 A-10) scored 11 goals on UMass keeper Rachel Vallarelli, the national leader in goals-against average who had not allowed double-digit goals all season.
The Colonials took an early 2-0 lead as junior Gabbi Hull scored twice in a span of just over two minutes. After assisting on Hull's second goal, junior Olivia Boudreau made it 3-1 with 23:37 to go, but UMass (16-1, 8-0 A-10) rattled off eight straight goals over the next 11 minutes to take control of the game. Junior Julia Lawson and Lynch tallied two of the next three goals to make it 10-5 with 4:19 remaining, but the Minutewomen scored the final two goals of the half for a 12-5 lead at the break.
UMass opened the second stanza with a 5-1 run for a game-high 17-6 lead, but the Colonials tallied five of the game's final six goals, including three straight by Mia, for the 18-11 final score.
The Minutewomen outshot the Colonials, 33-22, and held a 22-17 advantage in ground balls and a 17-14 edge in draw controls, including 10 by Hannah Murphy. Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Jones made nine saves for GW while Vallarelli stopped six shots for UMass.
Amy Tiernan paced the Minutewomen with four goals and three assists, and Erika Eipp also had seven points on three goals and four helpers.
Mia's three goals give her 47 on the year, moving her into third place on GW's single-season list. She finishes her career ranked third all-time with 134 career goals.
