GW Lacrosse Falls to George Mason, 17-5

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Washington lacrosse team fell to Atlantic 10 foe and Revolutionary Rival George Mason, 17-5, on Friday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.
Junior Gabbi Hull notched her first hat trick of the season and added two draw controls and two ground balls to pace the Colonials offensively. Sophomore Michaela Lynch tallied two points on a goal and an assist, and senior Jamie Bumgardner dished out a pair of helpers.
Mason (10-5, 5-2 A-10) scored the first six goals of the game before Hull put GW (6-9, 4-3 A-10) on the board at the 13:38 mark of the first half. The Patriots followed with four in a row before Lynch found Hull for her second goal of the game with 4:47 left. Mason then scored twice more to take a 12-2 halftime lead.
The Patriots tallied the first goal of the second half, but senior Rachel Mia and Lynch went back-to-back less than two minutes apart to make it 13-4. Mason, however, again scored four in a row for a 17-4 lead before Hull completed her hat trick to close out the scoring with 37 seconds remaining in the game.
Alexa McGovern scored a game-high four goals and added two assists to lead George Mason, while Jacquelyn Spalding and Melissa Lobaccaro each tallied three goals.
The Patriots outshot the Colonials, 24-15, and held a 14-9 advantage in draw controls and a 14-12 edge in ground balls. Freshman Brooke Sands tallied a team-best three ground balls and two caused turnovers for GW.
Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Jones recorded five saves in just over 50 minutes between the pipes and freshman Adele Wise stopped one shot while allowing two goals in 9:38 of action. Mason goalie Taylor Carpentier had seven saves.
George Mason earned a point in the Revolutionary Rivalry standings with the win, but the Colonials hold a 9.5-6.5 lead with three events remaining in the series. GW baseball can clinch the tri-cornered hat trophy with by taking its three-game series this weekend.
The Colonials conclude the regular season on Sunday at Massachusetts at 1 p.m. with a berth in the four-team Atlantic 10 Championship on the line. The Colonials host the conference tournament from May 1-3 at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus and currently sit in a tie with Duquesne and La Salle for fourth place in the standings.
