NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington lacrosse senior Jenn Seitz was named Atlantic 10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Brooke Sands was tabbed A-10 Rookie of the Week for games played April 13-19, the league announced on Monday.
Seitz led GW defensively in a pair of victories over A-10 rivals Duquesne and St. Bonaventure, tallying seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. She had three ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover in the Colonials' 14-13 overtime victory over the Dukes on Friday, then recorded four ground balls and two caused turnovers in a 16-10 Senior Day win over the Bonnies on Sunday.
Seitz, who leads GW with 28 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers this season, ranks fifth all-time in program history with 121 ground balls in her career.
A native of Columbia, Maryland, Seitz earns the first A-10 weekly award of her career. She is the first Colonial to be named Defensive Player of the Week since classmate Mackenzie Jones on April 21, 2014. She shares this week's honor with Massachusetts' Anne Farnham.
Sands tallied a pair of goals, four draw controls, two caused turnovers and a ground ball in the Colonials' two wins. Her goal against the Dukes on Friday ignited a 7-1 run as GW rallied from a five-goal second-half deficit. She also scored a goal against the Bonnies on Sunday while adding a career-high four draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.
A native of Brookfield, Connecticut, Sands earns her second Rookie of the Week award of the season after also garnering the accolade on March 2. She is the first Colonial to be named A-10 Rookie of the Week twice since now-junior Olivia Boudreau in 2013.
GW (6-8, 4-2 A-10) concludes the regular season this weekend with road games at A-10 rivals George Mason on Friday and Massachusetts on Sunday. The Colonials are currently tied with the Patriots for third place in the A-10 standings, one game behind Richmond (5-1) and a game ahead of La Salle and Duquesne (3-3). The top four teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the Atlantic 10 Championship, hosted at GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus May 1-3.
