GW Softball Drops Series Finale at Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio - The George Washington softball team dropped the series finale to Atlantic 10 foe Dayton on Sunday afternoon at the UD Softball Field.
The Colonials (21-20, 4-11 A-10) tallied six hits on the day but could not prevent the sweep as the Flyers (31-12, 15-2 A-10) posted seven runs while shutting out the Buff and Blue for a 7-0 victory.
The big blow came in the bottom of the third when a double and two walks led to a grand slam by Dayton's Tiffany Ricks to give the Flyers a 4-0 lead.
Another Dayton double in the fourth crossed home with the help of a sacrifice bunt and a single, and a pair of runs in the fifth on a hit batter and two hits gave the Flyers a 7-0 lead that would stick through the end of the game.
The Colonials battled in the seventh, utilizing four pinch hitters, as sophomore Jillian Galich singled and advanced to second after a third-strike wild pitch allowed freshman Aiyana Leal-Robles to take first base. A single from sophomore Megan Linn loaded the bases with one out, but a pair of groundouts cut GW's rally short.
Linn paced the Colonials with a 2-for-4 effort, while four others chipped in to round out GW's six hits.
Freshman Sarah Costlow took the complete game loss, while Dayton's Kayla English, the A-10's reigning Co-Pitcher of the Week, earned the victory.
The Colonials return home on Tuesday for their final non-conference bout as local rival Georgetown visits the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
