WASHINGTON - Freshman starting pitcher Sarah Costlow broke the program record for wins by a rookie as the George Washington softball squad closed out its 2015 non-conferece schedule with a 4-2 victory over local rival Georgetown on Tuesday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (22-20, 4-11 A-10) extend their home winning streak to four and finish the season with an 18-9 non-conference record, including a 7-1 mark at home. The Hoyas (13-28) have now fallen in their last five contests.
GW took the lead early after sophomore Megan Linn led off the first with a long double to left-center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Classmate Bradleigh Breland followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Linn and give the Buff and Blue a 1-0 lead.
The Hoyas got one back in the fourth as a bunt single scored on a costly error on the following play, but the Colonials answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Victoria Valos led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on an error on a pickoff attempt. Another walk followed by a stolen base put two runners in scoring position for a scorching two-RBI single up the middle by freshman Alana Anderson, giving GW a 3-1 lead after four.
In the fifth, the Buff and Blue posted an insurance run on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Valos following a walk and two singles.
Georgetown tallied a pair of doubles in the sixth to add one more run, but would not catch up to the Colonials as GW came away with the 4-2 triumph.
Linn led GW's offense with a 2-for-2 day with a run scored while Breland, Anderson and junior Carlee Gray rounded out the Colonials' five hits.
In the circle, Costlow earned the complete-game win while matching her career-high with five strikeouts and allowing just two free bases. The victory was the rookie's 14th of the season, surpassing a freshman record of 13 previously held by teammate Meghan Rico and Amanda Gabriel ('09).
The Colonials will next travel to the Bronx to take on Atlantic 10 foe Fordham in a three-game set beginning on Saturday at Bahoshy Field.
