WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball squad downed Coppin State, 5-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus in a Blue Ribbon game to support prostate cancer awareness.
The Colonials (21-17, 4-8 A-10) scored in each of the last three innings to secure the shutout victory over Coppin State (3-22) to wrap a six-game homestand.
The Buff and Blue broke a scoreless tie in the fourth as senior Samantha Dos Santos led off the inning with a walk, then stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw by the catcher. Sophomore Paige Kovalsky singled to plate Dos Santos and later scored after a trio of passed balls to give GW a 2-0 lead through four.
A leadoff walk again scored for the Colonials in the fifth as sophomore Megan Linn earned the free pass and advanced to second on a single by classmate Bradleigh Breland. A sacrifice bunt by senior Victoria Valos advanced the runners, and Linn scored on the throw to move the score to 3-0.
GW added two insurance runs in the sixth on three hits, including an RBI single by freshman Aiyana Leal-Robes to give the Colonials a 5-0 victory.
Kovalsky led the squad with a 3-for-3 effort and two runs scored as the Colonials tallied six hits on the day.
Valos is now GW's career leader in at-bats with 570, passing a mark previously set by Colonials great Elana Meyers Taylor ('07).
Freshman Sarah Costlow tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just five hits while fanning three. With the triumph, Costlow ties GW's record for wins by a rookie with 13, matching Amanda Gabriel ('07-'09) and current junior Meghan Rico.
The Colonials next travel to Dayton over the weekend for a three-game Atlantic 10 set beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at the UD Softball Stadium. The Flyers currently sit atop the conference standings with a 12-2 A-10 record.
