GW Softball Falls In Dayton Doubleheader

DAYTON, Ohio - The George Washington softball squad dropped both ends of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader at Dayton on Saturday at the UD Softball Field.
The Colonials (21-19, 4-10 A-10) fell in the series opener, 4-1, before Dayton (30-12, 14-2 A-10) took the nightcap, 4-0.
The Flyers struck first in game one with the help of a GW miscue as a single and a stolen base led to a run-scoring error to put Dayton up, 1-0, after two innings.
In the fourth, the home squad tacked on another run on a walk, sacrifice bunt and a single to increase the lead to 2-0. The Colonials cut the lead in half with a run of their own in the top of the fifth, after freshman Alana Anderson doubled with one out and advanced to third on a single by sophomore Paige Kovalsky. Junior Morgan Matetic doubled to center for the RBI before Dayton retired the side.
The Flyers notched a run in both the fifth and sixth that went unanswered to put the final tally at 4-1.
Kovalsky (8-2) took the loss in a complete-game effort. Each of GW's three hits came in the fifth inning.
In game two, freshman Sarah Costlow held Dayton scoreless until the third inning when a single and back-to-back doubles plated the first two, and a Colonials miscue led to the third and final run of the frame to give the Flyers a 3-0 lead.
The final run of the day came in the fifth, as a walk, an error and a fielder's choice plated one for Dayton, giving the Flyers the 4-0 victory.
The Colonials again tallied a trio of hits, coming from sophomores Megan Linn and Monica Macchiarulo and senior Victoria Valos. Valos now sits just one hit away from reaching the 200 career mark.
Freshman Sarah Costlow tossed a complete game in the loss, yielding two earned runs and just one free pass in the outing.
The Buff and Blue return to the UD Softball Field for the series finale on Sunday at 12 p.m.
