WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's tennis team heads to Charlottesville, Virginia, as the No. 8 seed in the 2015 Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship held from April 16-19 at the indoor Boar's Head Sports Club.
The Colonials (4-11, 0-3 A-10) enter the tournament after one of their most challenging spring schedules to date under second-year head coach Greg Munoz. The Buff and Blue took on a pair of the ITA's nationally ranked opponents, including then-No. 5 Virginia, while facing a trio of A-10 foes. As the eighth seed, GW will take on ninth-seeded George Mason on Thursday at 12 p.m. in the opening round.
Top-seeded VCU will compete for its third-straight A-10 title, while Richmond earned the second seed; both squads receive a first-round bye into the quarterfinals. Also ahead of the Colonials are Massachusetts (3rd), Davidson (4th), Fordham (5th), Duquesne (6th) and Saint Louis (7th). George Mason (9th), Dayton (10th), Saint Joseph's (11th), Rhode Island (12th), St. Bonaventure (13th) and La Salle (14) round out the field behind the Buff and Blue.
In 2014, the Colonials held the No. 3 seed and advanced to the A-10 semifinals for the first time since 2011 before falling to second-seeded Saint Louis in a close 4-2 decision. GW has been crowned conference champion three times (1984, 1992, 1993).
Freshman Teodora Radosavljevic leads the Colonials with an overall singles record of 18-9 and holds a 9-6 mark this spring, all at the No. 1 position, while defeating two of her three conference foes. Classmate Marie-Louise Decamps claims a 10-8 overall singles mark while going 4-3 this spring at the Nos. 2-3 slots. As a duo, Decamps and Radosavljevic lead the Colonials with a 5-3 record while traversing all flights of the doubles ladder.
Last season, GW defeated George Mason in a Revolutionary Rivalry regular-season matchup, 6-1, with Lana Robins, Egle Jakuciunaite and Taylor Nederlander downing their Patriots opponents in straight sets. Thursday's bout will also determine the winner of a #RevRivalry point, as this season's regularly scheduled contest was cancelled due to rain.
With a win over George Mason, the Colonials will advance to the quarterfinal round, where they will face No. 1 seed VCU at 10 a.m. on Friday. The A-10 Championship is a 14-team, single-elimination event, and the winner will receive an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament. The championship match will be held on Sunday, April 19 at 10 a.m.
