WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball squad scored six runs in the fifth inning to stage a come-from-behind, 9-5, victory over Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus to take the season series, 2-1.
The Colonials (20-17, 4-8 A-10) have reached the 20-win plateau for the fifth time in program history and the third time under fifth-year head coach Stacey Schramm. The Billikens (25-14, 9-5 A-10) dropped their first three-game conference set of the season.
SLU scored first, notching a trio of runs in the third on two walks, an error and a two-run double, to take a 3-0 lead.
The Colonials answered with a pair of runs in their half of the inning, as sophomores Megan Linn and Bradleigh Breland led off with singles and scored on a double by senior Victoria Valos.
The Billikens increased their lead to 5-2 with a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings.
The Buff and Blue came back and took a lead it would not surrender in the fifth, as Linn and Breland again led off the inning with back-to-back hits to put runners on second and third for Valos who took a pitch the opposite way to plate two. An error and a stolen base put two runners in scoring position for freshman Alana Anderson's two-RBI single up the middle. Sophomore Paige Kovalsky reached base as a result of a runner's interference then scored on a booming home run to right center by junior Morgan Matetic. The Colonials finished the inning with six runs on five hits to take an 8-5 lead after five.
An insurance run in the sixth came as a result of back-to-back hits from Linn and Breland - for the fourth time of the game - to complete the scoring and give GW a 9-5 victory.
Freshman Sarah Costlow earned the win after tossing 3.2 innings in relief of starter Kovalsky. Costlow is now just one win away from matching GW's record for wins by a freshman, currently held by Amanda Gabriel ('07-'09) and junior teammate Meghan Rico at 13 triumphs.
Linn (4-for-4, 3 R) and Breland (4-for-4, 1 RBI, 2 R) each set new career-highs for hits in a single game while setting up Valos (2-for-4) for four RBIs. Anderson (2-for-3, 2 RBI) also tallied a multi-hit game, while Matetic's homer rounded out the Colonials' 13 hits.
The Colonials wrap their six-game homestand on Wednesday as Coppin State visits the GW Softball Field for a Blue Ribbon game to raise prostate cancer awareness.
