WASHINGTON - Senior Jamie Bumgardner tied GW's all-time assists record, but the George Washington lacrosse team was edged by Atlantic 10 rival Richmond, 11-9, on Friday afternoon at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Bumgardner finished with a game-high five points on a goal and four assists to tie former teammate Sarah Phillips' all-time mark with 101 in her career. The senior from Hatfield, Pennsylvania, added a pair of draw controls against the Spiders.
Sophomore Bailey Forcier tallied three points on two goals and an assist, and junior Olivia Boudreau had a goal, an assist, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Freshman Brooke Sands chipped in a goal and a game-best four ground balls.
GW (4-8, 2-2 A-10) struck first, as Boudreau converted a feed from Bumgardner just 58 seconds into the game, but Richmond (7-6, 4-0 A-10) tallied three in a row, including back-to-back goals by Anna Jeszeck, to take a 3-1 lead.
The Colonials answered with a 3-0 run of their own, with Forcier's unassisted tally with 13:37 left in the half putting GW back on top, 4-3. The Spiders, however, tallied the final four goals of the frame, the last two by reining A-10 Rookie of the Week Kim Egizi, for a 7-4 advantage at the break.
Senior Rachel Mia opened the second-half scoring less than two minutes into the period, igniting another three-goal GW run, and junior Gabbi Hull's marker off a pass from Boudreau with 24:28 left tied the game at 7-7.
Richmond followed with a decisive 4-1 surge to regain a three-goal lead, 11-8, with 4:40 remaining on back-to-back goals by Bailey Zerr. Bumgardner found Forcier for the game's final tally with 1:58 to go.
GW outshot Richmond, 27-21, including 16-9 in the second half, but Spider goalkeeper Emily Boyce made 11 saves between the pipes, with seven in the second period. GW senior goalie Mackenzie Jones stopped five shots for the Colonials.
Richmond held a 14-8 advantage in draw controls, but the Colonials won the ground ball battle, 18-13.
The Colonials return to action next Friday when they host Atlantic 10 rival Duquesne at 4 p.m. at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
