WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team won both ends of a doubleheader against Delaware State behind strong pitching performances on Monday at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy in Southeast, D.C. The pair of games marked the first collegiate softball contests ever to be held at the facility.
The Colonials (7-8) defeated the Hornets (1-10) in walk-off fashion, 4-3, in game one before shutting down Delaware State's offense in a 5-0 victory in game two.
GW struck first in game one, breaking through in a scoreless game in the third after sophomore Bradleigh Breland led off the inning with a bunt single. Breland then swiped second before junior Morgan Matetic worked a walk to set the stage for sophomore Paige Kovalsky, who singled to center to plate the speedy Breland. Matetic moved to third and Kovalsky advanced to second on Delaware State's attempt to nab Breland at home. Senior Samantha Dos Santos then ripped a two-RBI double to put the Colonials ahead by three heading into the fifth.
The Hornets answered back with a pair of two-out runs, on two walks and two hits off starting pitcher Kovalsky. Delaware State would tie the game in the seventh after a lead-off single was followed by a sacrifice bunt and a RBI double to knot the game at three.
In the Colonials' half of the seventh, Dos Santos starting the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Rochelle Draper. Sophomore Monica Macchiarulo, pinch hitting for freshman Morgan Rinehart, reached on a fielder's choice as Dos Santos was caught at third. Sophomore Megan Linn then hit a booming double to left field to plate the winning run for the Buff and Blue.
Freshman Sarah Costlow, in for relief of Kovalsky, earned the win.
In game two, the Colonials posted five runs in the first inning that would go unanswered and give GW its second win of the day. Linn worked a walk to start the inning and quickly stole second then advanced to third on a Breland ground ball. Senior Victoria Valos stroked an opposite-way double to right field to plate Linn. Junior Morgan Matetic then hit a two-run blast over the left field fence for her team-best third of the season, putting GW up by three. Junior Carlee Gray walked and advanced to third on a Dos Santos single to put her in position to score on a wild pitch. Draper batted in Dos Santos with a double to finish the scoring.
In game two, Costlow held the Hornets to just three hits and two walks in her first career complete game shutout for her second win of the day, moving to 5-6 on the season.
Breland's 3-for-5 effort at the plate places her atop GW's leader board with a .362 average on the season. Dos Santos also posted a 3-for-5 performance in the doubleheader, along with a pair of RBIs.
Valos now holds sole possession as GW's all-time leader in career runs scored with 115, surpassing a mark set by Olympic two-time medal-winning bobsledder Elana Meyers-Taylor ('07).
The Colonials will meet Delaware State again for a single game on Wednesday at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy at 11 a.m. before heading to Norfolk State on Thursday to make up a previously postponed doubleheader.
