WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team defeated Delaware State, 2-1, for the third straight game in a mid-week match up at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy on Wednesday.
The Colonials (8-8) used aggressive base running to outscore the Hornets (1-11) in the third meeting of the week between the two squads.
GW scored first after lead-off batter Megan Linn was hit by a pitch then quickly stole second for her team-high 12th swipe of the season. Senior Victoria Valos then walked to put runners on first and second for junior Morgan Matetic, who hit a ball to left field that the defense could not handle. The speedy Linn scored on the error to give the Colonials the early lead before the inning ended.
The Colonials took advantage of another Delaware State miscue in the fourth after junior Carlee Gray led off the inning with her first of two doubles to left center and was relieved by pinch runner sophomore Marissa Mangini. The quick Mangini swiped third and drew a defensive error to allow her to score the second and final GW run.
Sophomore Paige Kovalsky started in the circle for the Buff and Blue, but got into trouble early, working out of bases loaded jams in each of the first two innings. Freshman Sarah Costlow came on in relief in the third and tossed a trio of perfect innings before allowing two base runners in the sixth. The Hornets would not get on the board until the top of the seventh, when a two-out single was followed by an RBI double before Costlow secured the final out of the game.
With the win, Costlow improves to 6-6 on the season. Gray posted the only multi-hit performance of the game with a pair of doubles to move her atop the Colonials' leader board with a .354 average. Matetic and Linn recorded the other of GW's four hits on the day.
The Colonials will travel to Norfolk State on Thursday in the make-up of a previously postponed doubleheader with the Spartans. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. and fans can follow along with live stats here, or live video here.
