WASHINGTON - GW sailing will continue its growth as a varsity program this weekend when it hosts its inaugural GW Team Race at the Washington Sailing Marina in Alexandria, Virginia.
GW Team Race
Skippers: Brendan Shanahan, Kai Friesecke, Roger Dorr
Crews: Miranda Bakos, Belle Strachan, Shira Golub
Alternates: Daniel DelBello, Colin Kennedy, Gabriella Malek, Meagan Murphy
The GW Team Race, the first home regatta for the third-year varsity program, was made possible due to the #RaiseHightheSails campaign that raised the funds for a new 18-boat fleet for the Colonials last fall. There will be a boat dedication ceremony at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday prior to the start of racing at 10 a.m.
GW will face MAISA rivals Cornell, Fordham, Hobart and William Smith, Navy and SUNY Maritime on the Potomac River this weekend.
"It is going to be a very competitive regatta with all six teams in contention to win," said Head Coach John Pearce. "It's a historic event for us, and our goal is to win it and establish our home-water advantage at our first home regatta. Equally as important is that this is a great chance for us to get racing experience under our belts early in the season against our main MAISA rivals."
