WASHINGTON - The George Washington lacrosse team dropped its non-conference finale to California, 15-11, on Monday afternoon at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Senior Rachel Mia, who was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week earlier in the day, paced the Colonials with four goals, three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while senior Jamie Bumgardner and junior Olivia Boudreau each tallied four points on two goals and two assists. Sophomore Michaela Lynch also scored twice for GW.
Boudreau opened a frenetic first half with a free-position goal just 66 seconds into the game. Cal's Bella Huther tied it up 45 seconds later with the first of her game-best five goals, but Boudreau found Mia 18 seconds later to put the Colonials back on top, 2-1. The Bears took a 3-2 lead with back-to-back markers by Gaby Christman and Chloe Landry before Mia knotted the score at the 23:21 mark.
Cal (2-6) then scored six in a row over an eight-minute stretch, with two by Huther and two by Christman, for a 9-3 lead. Bumgardner and Lynch interrupted the spurt with back-to-back tallies to make it 9-5, but the Bears countered with three more - including two by Huther - for a 12-5 advantage with 2:32 left.
The Colonials rallied with four straight over the final 2:10 of the half to trail by just three, 12-9, at the break. Mia scored twice during the stretch while Bumgardner had a pair of assists.
After a high-scoring first half, the second stanza was a defensive battle. Brittany Ward scored for Cal just 61 seconds into the period, but neither team found the back of the net again until Bumgardner scored on a free-position shot with 13:35 remaining. Cal tallied two more for a 15-10 lead before senior Casey Dell'Isola scored a free-position goal - her first of the season - with 5:36 left to account for the final marker of the game.
Huther recorded a game-best six points (5g, 1a) for Cal while Christman scored four times and added three ground balls and three draw controls.
Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Jones made three saves in nearly 55 minutes between the pipes while freshman Adele Wise stopped one shot in 5:15 of action. Helen Hansen played all 60 minutes in goal for Cal and recorded seven saves.
GW outshot Cal, 25-23, and held a 16-12 advantage in draw controls, including four by sophomore Shea Cassidy and three by sophomore Bailey Forcier, while the Bears edged the Colonials in ground balls, 13-12.
The Colonials return to action on Friday when they open A-10 play at league newcomer Davidson. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
