WASHINGTON - The George Washington lacrosse team concludes non-conference play with two games in a three-day stretch. The Colonials will visit Delaware on Saturday at 12 p.m. before returning to the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on Monday to host California at 4 p.m.
GW (2-4) defeated Mount St. Mary's, 18-12, on Tuesday to snap a three-game skid. The Colonials outscored the Mount, 9-2, in the second half to rally from a halftime deficit. Senior Rachel Mia matched the team record with seven goals in the game, while senior Jamie Bumgardner set a new program mark with seven assists and added three goals for 10 points, equaling the second-most in a game in team history. Sophomore Bailey Forcier added a career-high four goals against the Mount.
Mia leads the A-10 with 22 goals and 3.67 goals per game this season while Bumgardner is second in the league with 13 assists and 2.17 per contest. The senior duo is also second and third, respectively, with 3.67 and 3.33 points per game. Mia now ranks fifth all-time at GW with 109 goals in her career.
Delaware (6-3) is receiving votes in the most recent IWLCA poll. The Blue Hens are coming off a 6-5 win over Towson on Wednesday. Caitlin McCartney, a three-time All-Region honoree, was the only Blue Hen to score twice in the game. Another All-Region pick, Casey Lyons paces the Blue Hens with 37 points (24g, 13a) while McCartney has tallied 30 points (25g, 5a) plus 21 ground balls and a team-best 33 draw controls. Delaware has outscored its opponents, 117-61, and goalkeeper Alex Zaugra boasts a 6.78 goals-against average.
Delaware edged GW, 10-8, last season in the first-ever meeting between the teams. Mia and Michaela Lynch each scored twice for the Colonials.
California (1-5) is coming off a 20-14 loss to San Diego State on Sunday and will visit Towson on Saturday before coming to DC for Monday's contest. Jena Fritts paced the Bears against the Aztecs with four points on two goals and two assists. Bella Huther has scored a team-best 15 goals and 19 points on the season. Kate Gutierrez and Helen Hansen have split time in goal and combine for a 16.54 GAA.
The Bears lead GW, 3-1, in the all-time series, but the teams have not met since 2008, when Cal edged GW, 13-11, in Berkeley, California.
