AUBURN, Ala. - The George Washington softball team dropped a pair of games to NCAA Regional participants in day two of the Plainsman Invite in Auburn, Alabama. The Colonials fell to #19/20 Auburn, 8-0 (5 innings), before coming up short against UAB, 5-0, in the nightcap on Saturday.
In game one, the Colonials (1-3) were able to post just three hits against Auburn (4-0), including a double by sophomore second baseman Megan Linn. Junior Carlee Gray and sophomore Bradleigh Breland each chipped in a single, but the Buff and Blue were unable to string together a rally as the Tigers' hurlers yielded no walks in the game.
Freshman Sarah Costlow took the ball for her second start in the circle, but got into trouble early, allowing five runs, four earned, in the first inning to give the Tigers a lead GW would not overcome. Junior Meghan Rico came on in relief in the third inning, tossing 1.2 innings of one-run ball before freshman Ashley Pilcher worked out of a bases loaded, one out jam in her first collegiate appearance. Auburn would score two more in the fifth inning to enact the mercy-rule and end the game.
In game two, Costlow again got the start for the Colonials against UAB (2-2), tossing three innings of no-hit ball before two walks in the fourth led to a three-run home run by the Blazers' Amy Dennis to put UAB ahead. Costlow would go the distance, allowing two more runs in the seventh in her second complete game of the season, yielding five runs, three earned, on five hits.
At the plate the Colonials notched four hits but were unable to convert any runs as GW was once again not issued any free passes. Senior Victoria Valos led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles in the contest.
GW will play its final game of the Plainsman Invite at 12 p.m. Sunday against Appalachian State (1-2) at Auburn's Jane B. Moore Field.
