WASHINGTON - The George Washington lacrosse team makes its first-ever trip to Lynchburg, Virginia, on Wednesday to take on Liberty at 4 p.m.
GW (1-1) defeated Yale, 13-5, on Saturday. Senior Rachel Mia scored a game-high four goals while senior Jamie Bumgardner tallied five points on three goals and two assists. The Colonials used a pair of 5-0 runs - one in each half - to control the Bulldogs.
Mia leads the Colonials with six goals this season, while Bumgardner has also recorded six points on three goals and three assists. Eight different players have accounted for GW's 16 goals so far this season. Senior Rachel Quinn paces the Colonials with six ground balls and junior Gabbi Hull has won a team-high five draw controls.
Mia is tied for seventh all-time at GW with 93 career goals and needs seven more to become just the sixth player in school history with 100 in her career. Bumgardner is second on the Colonials' all-time list with 81 assists and eighth with 130 points, and senior Jenn Seitz moved into sole possession of fifth place with 90 career draw controls.
GW and Liberty met for the first time last season at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus, and the Colonials came away with a convincing 21-10 victory. Bumgardner set a program record with six assists and 12 points against the Flames and Mia added five markers in the contest, while Seitz had seven draw controls.
Liberty (0-3) has dropped each of its first three contests by a combined 56-27, but the Flames have not played since falling to Vanderbilt, 20-10, on Feb. 15. Sam Struss paced Liberty with four goals against the Commodores, while Nina Dunay also notched a hat trick and goalkeeper Juliann Elmer recorded 23 saves.
Struss leads Liberty with nine goals this season while Katy Pridemore has tallied a team-best 10 points on six goals and four assists. Elmer has played all 180 minutes between the pipes this season and has recorded 50 saves and a team-high 10 ground balls in three games but owns an 18.67 goals-against average.
