WASHINGTON - George Washington's women's soccer Head Coach Sarah Barnes has added former Virginia Tech assistant and goalkeeper coach Erin Lycan Ridley to her staff.
"We are thrilled to have Erin join our staff," said Coach Barnes. "She brings a wealth of experience both as a player and a coach which will be a tremendous benefit to our entire team and staff. Her experience at the highest level of play, including a College Cup appearance, will allow her to make significant contributions both at the goalkeeper and team levels."
During her four seasons as an assistant at Virginia Tech, Ridley helped the Hokies post 44 shutouts, including a program-high 12 in 2012 and 2014. In 2013, she helped lead the Hokies to their first-ever College Cup after they entered the NCAA Tournament as the top-ranked seed. In 2014, Ridley saw her squad reach its third Sweet 16 appearance during her tenure, while posting a school record for fewest goals allowed at 18.
Coach Ridley also played a significant role in recruiting student-athletes at Virginia Tech, while organizing team travel and leadership exercises, as well as incorporating alumni engagement into the program.
Prior to her stint in Blacksburg, Virginia, Ridley served as the assistant and goalkeeper coach at Davidson for three seasons. In 2009, she helped the Wildcats clinch their first NCAA Tournament berth after winning the SoCon Tournament Title.
Ridley spent two seasons at Stephen F. Austin as an assistant coach and interim head coach before heading to Davidson. The Ladyjacks won the Southland Conference Title under Ridley's watch and appeared in the NCAA Tournament.
As a player, Ridley was a three-year letterwinner as a goalkeeper for Virginia, leading the Cavaliers to an Atlantic Coast Conference Championship in 2004. She was co-captain that year.
Ridley holds National `B' and `C' Licenses from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) as well as National Soccer Coaches of America Association (NSCAA) Advanced National and Advanced National Goalkeeping diplomas.
"I am honored and excited to be a part of the women's soccer program at GW," said Coach Ridley. "The program is at a great place, and I am looking forward to working under Coach Barnes and being part of a tradition of excellence here."
