This Weekend: Three George Washington sailors set their sights on the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Singlehanded National Championship, which will be held at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Racing gets underway on Saturday and concludes on Sunday.
ICSA Singlehanded Nationals: Competing in the championship for GW will be junior Brendan Shanahan on the men's side and freshmen Sarah Alexander and Riley Legault on the women's side. Shanahan returns following a ninth-place showing at last year's regatta. Alexander and Legault, meanwhile, are two of five freshmen in the nation to qualify for the women's championship.
The Field: Both the men's and women's championship fields are comprised of 18 sailors from various institutions. GW, with three sailors competing, is tied for the second most in the field with Georgetown, Stanford, Wisconsin and Yale. Only College of Charleston, with four, has more.
Pearce's Points: "That we have the second-most sailors competing in this event is definitely a great indication of where our team is and where we are heading. Brendan was very close to a top-five finish last year in a regatta that was cut short due to lack of wind on the last day, so he is extra focused on putting together an excellent performance this year.
"It's fantastic that Sarah and Riley qualified for the nationals as freshmen. I'm really happy for them to have this experience and to race hard against the top players in the country. They both have great speed when the wind conditions suit their strengths, so it'll be exciting to see what they can do on a national stage."
